All the Things You’re Really Paying For When You Book a Photography Session

Let’s peel back the curtain on what goes into a professional photography session—because it’s so much more than a quick snap of the camera and a few digital files. When you invest in a session, you’re also investing in my time, expertise, gear, creativity, and tons of little details that make your final images shine.

1. Years of Training and Education

Photography isn’t just about pressing a button. I’ve spent countless hours (and let’s be honest, a good chunk of money) learning the art of lighting, composition, editing techniques, and child-friendly posing. I still invest in regular workshops and online courses to keep my skills fresh. All that behind-the-scenes know-how means you get the best images possible.

2. A Mountain of Equipment

From the big stuff like professional-grade cameras and multiple lenses to those trusty (and sometimes finicky!) light and modifiers, each piece of gear has a specific purpose. The equipment list only seems to grow over time: new backdrops, reflectors, diffusers—you name it. And let’s not forget about backup systems in case something decides to stop working mid-shoot.

3. A Well-Stocked Studio

I’ve curated a collection of backdrops, chairs, stools, pillows, curtains—practically everything you might need to make the set cozy or dreamy or playful. Whether we want a whimsical floral arch or a modern, minimalist vibe, I have an arsenal of props to bring that vision to life. This studio is my “creative lab,” filled with everything I need to tailor each session to your child’s unique style.

4. Expert Set Design

Long before you step into the studio, I’m concepting, sketching, and sourcing items to bring your child’s personality forward. If your kiddo loves dinosaurs, you bet I’m combing through prop vendors to find the cutest prehistoric décor. If it’s ballet, I’m checking out fabric shops to create a dreamy backdrop. Putting these scenes together is part imagination, part trial and error—and it’s a big chunk of what you’re paying for.

5. Kid-Friendly Direction and Posing

Kids aren’t professional models—and I wouldn’t want them to be! Guiding them into natural poses (and making them laugh so we get those genuine smiles) is part of my specialty. It takes practice, patience, and sometimes a bit of silliness on my part (“Who can show me their silliest dinosaur roar?”). Making children feel at ease so their real personalities can shine is a skill built from years of trial, error, and heartwarming successes.

6. Specialized Editing Software and Skills

Once the session’s done, it’s editing time—often the most time-consuming part of my job. I use professional editing software to color-correct, retouch little blemishes, and tweak lighting so every detail is just right. And yes, that software comes with its own price tag, plus the training to use it properly.

7. Custom Printed Products and Professional Labs

Remember that beautiful magazine I create with your child’s quotes and photos? Or the heirloom prints on fine art paper? I partner with specialized, professional print labs to ensure you’re getting top-quality materials that won’t fade in a year. These labs are different from a standard one-hour photo counter, and accessing them requires certifications, memberships, and specialized knowledge.

8. Networking with Vendors and Creators

I’m constantly scouting new backdrops, hunting down unique props, and staying in touch with vendors who can custom-make items for specific themes. Knowing the right people saves me time and frustration (not to mention shipping disasters!), and it ensures your child’s session is one-of-a-kind. You’re benefiting from my relationships with these niche creators and companies.

9. Ongoing Maintenance and Upgrades

My camera gear, props, and studio don’t just magically stay in tip-top shape. Cameras need servicing, backdrops eventually show wear, and props get replaced (especially after a toddler decides they make a great chew toy!). Part of my fees go right back into ensuring everything is updated, safe, and looking fabulous for your session.

10. A Relaxed and Memorable Experience

Finally—and I think most importantly—you’re paying for peace of mind and a fun time. When the day of the shoot arrives, you don’t have to worry about whether the background is wrinkled or if your child will feel comfortable. Everything is ready, tested, and waiting. My entire goal is to make sure your child has a positive experience that results in images that make your heart skip a beat years down the road.

Ready to Book Your Session?
When you invest in a photography session, you’re receiving far more than a handful of pictures. You’re supporting all the passion, training, gear, creativity, and thoughtful planning that go into capturing your child’s spirit in a way you’ll cherish forever. If that resonates with you, let’s chat!

I’m here to make the entire process—from concept brainstorming to that final printed piece—feel rewarding for both you and your child. After all, this is about preserving the moments that make today so special, so you can relive them tomorrow, next year, or decades from now when they’re not so little anymore.
